fragrant heirloom sweet pea.
sweet peas like cooler temperatures when starting off so now is the best time to plant! they have been growing in cold temperatures for almost 2 months and are ready to take off.
plant: set up a trellis, posts with netting or plant by a fence in a sunny spot so they have plenty of space to climb. space 6” apart and pinch once they are approximately 6” tall to encourage branching.
care: provide some compost once or twice as they grow. sweet peas are hungry! water well during dry weather and about 1 inch of water per week. as the temperatures warm and after the plants are established, mulch to keep the soil cool. watch for aphids! these pests love sweet peas. soapy sprays once per week will help keep them at bay.
harvest: as soon as the first bud on the stem opens. the more you cut, the more they bloom and the longer the stems get!
